Second Skin Tattoo Aftercare Guide | Inkden Tattoo Studio Blackpool

At Inkden Tattoo Studio, our approach to second skin tattoo aftercare depends on the tattoo style, the intensity of the tattooing and the condition of your skin.

A heavily saturated colour tattoo or solid blackwork tattoo may release more plasma and require a different dressing routine from a lighter black-and-grey or fine-line tattoo.

Your tattoo artist will choose the most appropriate dressing and explain how long it should remain in place.

1. Colour Tattoos, Solid Blackwork and Heavily Saturated Tattoos

Tattoos involving extensive colour packing, solid black areas or intensive shading may release larger amounts of plasma, blood and excess ink during the first 24 hours.

For these tattoos, we may recommend one of two approaches.

Option A: Protective Pad Overnight

After your tattoo session, your artist applies a protective tattoo pad.

We ask you to keep the pad in place overnight and return to Inkden the following day.

At your return appointment, your artist will:

  • Remove the overnight dressing.
  • Gently clean the tattoo.
  • Assess the condition of your skin.
  • Allow the area to dry appropriately.
  • Apply second skin if the tattoo is suitable.

Your artist will explain how long to keep the new dressing in place.

If the overnight pad leaks, becomes saturated, slips or becomes contaminated, contact the studio for advice.

Option B: Second Skin for the First 24 Hours

In some cases, your artist may apply second skin immediately after tattooing.

For heavily saturated tattoos, the first dressing may need to be removed after approximately 24 hours, particularly if a significant amount of plasma has collected beneath the film.

A collection of blood, plasma and excess ink beneath the dressing is common during early healing.

However, if the dressing becomes excessively filled, leaks or loses its seal, it may need to be removed sooner.

Your artist will advise whether another dressing should be applied or whether you should continue with traditional aftercare.

2. Black-and-Grey, Fine-Line and Less Intensively Worked Tattoos

Black-and-grey tattoos, fine-line designs and tattoos involving less intensive skin work may release smaller amounts of fluid.

When appropriate, we may apply second skin immediately after completing the tattoo.

For these tattoos, Inkden may recommend keeping the second skin in place for up to 5 days, provided:

  • The dressing remains properly sealed.
  • The entire tattoo remains covered.
  • No fluid is leaking from underneath the film.
  • The skin is not showing signs of an adhesive reaction.
  • The dressing manufacturer’s instructions permit that wear time.

If the film begins to peel away and exposes any part of the tattoo, it should be removed rather than left partially covering the area.

If significant fluid collects underneath, contact your artist for advice. The dressing may need to be removed earlier.

3. When Should You Remove Second Skin Early?

Regardless of tattoo style, remove a compromised dressing when:

  • The film leaks or develops a hole.
  • An edge lifts and exposes part of the tattoo.
  • Water or dirt gets underneath the dressing.
  • The dressing loses its protective seal.
  • Significant irritation, blistering or a suspected adhesive reaction develops.

Do not puncture the film to release plasma.

Do not attempt to repair a leaking dressing with household tape.

If the dressing is damaged or exposing the tattoo, carefully remove it, gently clean the tattoo and contact your artist if you need further instructions.

4. How to Remove Second Skin

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Use warm running water, preferably in the shower.
  3. Carefully loosen an edge of the dressing.
  4. Slowly stretch and peel the film back over itself, keeping it close to the skin.
  5. Do not pull sharply upwards.
  6. Once removed, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
  7. Pat dry with clean, disposable paper towel.
  8. Continue with the aftercare routine recommended by your artist.

5. After Removing Second Skin

Once your dressing has been removed:

  • Wash the tattoo gently approximately twice daily.
  • Clean it additionally if it becomes dirty or contaminated.
  • Use mild, fragrance-free soap.
  • Pat dry with clean, disposable paper towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of suitable tattoo aftercare cream as needed.
  • Do not scratch, pick or peel healing skin.
  • Avoid swimming and prolonged soaking until completely healed.
  • Protect the tattoo from direct sunlight for at least 4 weeks and until fully healed.

Inkden also asks clients to avoid alcohol for a minimum of 4 days after tattooing.

6. Important Information

The amount of ink used does not determine dressing time on its own.

Your artist will also consider the condition of the skin, fluid release, tattoo placement, adhesive tolerance and the manufacturer’s instructions.

The five-day period is not a guarantee that every tattoo can safely remain covered for that long.

If you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, worsening swelling, pus, fever or other signs of infection, seek prompt medical advice.
