Tattoo preparation is an important part of getting the best possible experience from your appointment. Whether you’re getting your first tattoo or preparing for a full-day session, knowing what to eat, how to care for your skin and what to avoid can help you arrive feeling comfortable and confident.
You’ve chosen your tattoo artist, discussed your ideas and booked your appointment. Now it’s time to make sure you’re ready.
At Inkden Tattoo Studio in Blackpool, we’ve created this complete guide to help you prepare for your tattoo appointment, look after your skin and understand our studio requirements.
Please read the following information carefully before your session.
1. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Being well-rested is one of the most important things you can do before getting tattooed.
Tattooing can be physically demanding, especially during longer appointments. Lack of sleep may increase your sensitivity to discomfort and make it harder to relax.
Our recommendations:
- Get a full night’s sleep before your appointment.
- Avoid late nights and excessive physical activity the evening before.
- Arrive feeling rested and ready for your session.
- Let us know if you’re feeling unwell.
A good night’s rest can help make your tattoo experience more comfortable.
2. Eat a Substantial Meal Before Your Tattoo
Never arrive for your tattoo appointment on an empty stomach.
Eating a proper meal before your session helps maintain your energy levels and may reduce the risk of feeling faint or lightheaded.
We recommend eating a balanced meal approximately 1–2 hours before your appointment.
Choose something containing carbohydrates and protein to provide sustained energy.
For longer tattoo sessions, bring lunch or additional snacks.
Complimentary Refreshments at Inkden
We want you to feel comfortable throughout your visit.
At Inkden Tattoo Studio, we provide complimentary:
- Water
- Soft drinks
- Hot drinks
- A chocolate bar for clients attending full-day sessions
For full-day appointments, we recommend bringing your own lunch and any additional food you may need.
Although hot drinks are available, we recommend choosing caffeine-free options before and during your tattoo session.
3. Stay Properly Hydrated
Good hydration supports your general wellbeing and comfort during tattooing.
Drink water regularly in the days leading up to your appointment and on the day itself.
You don’t need to drink excessive amounts. Simply maintain your normal, healthy fluid intake.
Avoid arriving dehydrated, particularly if you’re attending a long session.
4. Alcohol, Caffeine and Recreational Drugs
Alcohol: 24 Hours Before and 4 Days After
Do not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before your tattoo appointment.
Alcohol can contribute to dehydration and may affect bleeding and your general wellbeing during tattooing.
As part of Inkden’s aftercare policy, we also ask clients to avoid alcohol for a minimum of 4 days after their tattoo session.
Clients who arrive under the influence of alcohol will not be tattooed.
Caffeine: Avoid Excessive Intake
We recommend avoiding coffee, energy drinks and other high-caffeine beverages on the day of your appointment.
High caffeine intake may increase nervousness, restlessness, shakiness and heart rate, which can make a long tattoo session less comfortable.
If you regularly consume caffeine, there is no need to stop abruptly if doing so would cause withdrawal headaches or other symptoms.
Moderate caffeine intake is not generally considered a medical contraindication to tattooing, but we encourage clients to limit it and prioritise water, food and rest.
Recreational Drugs
Do not attend your appointment under the influence of recreational drugs.
For safety reasons, clients suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs will not be tattooed.
Any deposit consequences will be handled according to our booking and cancellation policy.
5. No Numbing Creams or Topical Anaesthetics
Inkden Tattoo Studio does not use or permit numbing creams, numbing sprays or other topical anaesthetic products during tattoo sessions.
Please do not apply any numbing product before arriving at the studio.
Some products may irritate the skin or affect its condition, potentially interfering with the tattooing process. Incorrect use can also carry health risks.
If you arrive having applied a numbing product, your artist may be unable to proceed with your appointment.
If you have concerns about discomfort or pain management, please speak to your artist before your session.
6. Sun Exposure, Tanning and Holidays
Healthy, undamaged skin is essential for tattooing.
Before Your Tattoo: Minimum 3 Weeks
We recommend avoiding deliberate tanning, sunbathing, sunbeds and intensive sun exposure to the area being tattooed for at least 3 weeks before your appointment.
Your skin must be free from:
- Sunburn
- Peeling
- Excessive redness
- Irritation
- Tanning-related skin damage
Ordinary outdoor activities are fine when the area is properly protected.
We cannot tattoo sunburned, peeling or damaged skin.
After Your Tattoo: Minimum 4 Weeks
Avoid direct sun exposure, sunbathing and sunbeds on your new tattoo for at least 4 weeks and until the skin has fully healed.
Keep your healing tattoo protected with clean, loose clothing.
Do not apply sunscreen directly to a fresh or unhealed tattoo.
Once your tattoo has completely healed, use broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen to help protect your artwork from UV damage and fading.
Planning a Holiday?
If you’re planning a beach holiday, sunny destination, swimming or other water-based activities, please plan your tattoo appointment accordingly.
We recommend allowing at least 4 weeks between your tattoo appointment and a holiday involving significant sun exposure or swimming.
Larger tattoos or slower-healing areas may require additional recovery time.
These timeframes are Inkden’s studio guidelines. Your skin must be fully healed regardless of how many weeks have passed.
7. Prepare Your Skin Before Your Appointment
Proper skin preparation helps your artist work on healthy, comfortable skin.
In the days leading up to your appointment:
- Keep your skin clean.
- Moisturise regularly with a product you already tolerate.
- Avoid scratching, picking or irritating the tattoo area.
- Avoid harsh exfoliating treatments and chemical peels.
- Do not apply fake tan to the area being tattooed.
- Avoid sunburn and tanning-related irritation.
Shower Before Your Appointment
Please shower before arriving at the studio.
Clean skin helps maintain a hygienic working environment and allows your artist to prepare the tattoo area appropriately.
Avoid applying heavy lotions, oils or perfumes directly to the tattoo area immediately before your session.
Should You Shave Before Getting Tattooed?
Usually, no.
Your tattoo artist will shave and prepare the area when necessary.
Shaving yourself immediately before your appointment can cause small cuts, razor burn or skin irritation.
If you’re unsure, ask your artist in advance.
8. Medical Conditions, Medication and Allergies
Important: Notify Us at Least 72 Hours Before Your Appointment
Please inform Inkden Tattoo Studio of any relevant medical conditions, medications, allergies or skin concerns at least 72 hours before your scheduled tattoo appointment.
Certain medical conditions, medications or skin problems may affect your suitability for tattooing and could require medical advice or rescheduling.
Please contact us in advance if you have:
- Heart conditions or blood pressure problems.
- Epilepsy or a history of seizures.
- Haemophilia or other bleeding or clotting disorders.
- Diabetes or conditions affecting healing.
- Blood-borne infections, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV.
- Allergies to tattoo pigments, latex, adhesives or skincare products.
- Eczema, psoriasis, acne or other skin conditions affecting the tattoo area.
- A history of unusual scarring or keloids.
- Scars, moles or unusual skin changes in the area being tattooed.
- An active infection or illness that may affect your appointment.
Please also tell us about any medication that may be relevant to tattooing, particularly blood thinners, antibiotics, immunosuppressants or medication affecting skin health and healing.
In some circumstances, we may advise you to consult a healthcare professional before proceeding.
Never stop or change prescribed medication without advice from your healthcare professional.
Why We Require 72 Hours’ Notice
Notifying us at least 72 hours before your appointment gives us time to discuss any concerns and determine whether your session can proceed safely.
If relevant information is disclosed only when you arrive, your appointment may need to be postponed or cancelled.
Deposit consequences, where applicable, will be assessed under our booking and cancellation policy.
Medical information is treated confidentially.
9. Wear Comfortable Clothing
Choose loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area.
For example:
- Arm or shoulder tattoo: A loose T-shirt or sleeveless top.
- Leg tattoo: Shorts or loose trousers.
- Back tattoo: Clothing that can be adjusted or removed comfortably.
- Chest or torso tattoo: Practical clothing that allows access while maintaining privacy.
Remember that you may be sitting or lying in the same position for several hours.
Avoid wearing expensive or delicate clothing, as tattoo ink and other products may occasionally cause staining.
For longer sessions, comfortable layers can be useful.
10. What to Bring to Your Tattoo Appointment
We recommend bringing:
- Valid photographic identification.
- Your phone and charger.
- Headphones, music or other suitable entertainment.
- Lunch and additional snacks for long sessions.
- Comfortable clothing appropriate for your tattoo placement.
- Any reference material or information requested by your artist.
Complimentary refreshments are available at Inkden, including water, soft drinks and hot drinks.
Clients attending full-day sessions will also be offered a chocolate bar.
11. Age Requirements and Identification
All tattoo clients must be at least 18 years old.
Tattooing anyone under 18 is prohibited by law in England, even with parental consent.
Inkden requires valid photographic identification as proof of age.
If you cannot provide acceptable identification when requested, we will be unable to tattoo you.
Please make sure you bring your ID to your appointment.
12. Arrive on Time and Attend Alone
Please arrive at your scheduled appointment time.
We ask clients to attend alone unless otherwise agreed with the studio in advance.
Only the person receiving the tattoo is permitted in the treatment room, unless the studio has authorised an exception.
This helps us maintain a safe, comfortable and professional working environment.
If you’re running late, please contact us as soon as possible.
13. Preparing for a Full-Day Tattoo Session
Large tattoos and full-day appointments require extra preparation.
We recommend:
- Getting plenty of sleep the night before.
- Eating a substantial meal before arriving.
- Staying properly hydrated.
- Bringing lunch and additional snacks.
- Wearing comfortable clothing.
- Bringing headphones or entertainment.
- Avoiding unnecessary commitments immediately after your session.
- Allowing yourself time to rest afterwards.
Your artist will arrange breaks as appropriate.
If you feel faint, dizzy, uncomfortable or need a break, please tell your artist immediately.
14. Cancelling or Rescheduling Your Appointment
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please notify Inkden Tattoo Studio at least 72 hours before your scheduled appointment.
Our booking and cancellation policy applies to deposits and appointment changes.
Please contact us promptly if you develop an illness, sunburn, skin irritation or another condition that may affect your appointment, even if fewer than 72 hours remain.
Do not attend an appointment with a potentially unsafe condition simply because the cancellation deadline has passed.
15. Tattoo Aftercare Starts with Good Preparation
Your tattoo experience doesn’t end when your appointment finishes.
Proper aftercare is essential to help your skin heal and maintain the appearance of your new tattoo.
Your artist will provide instructions appropriate for your tattoo and the dressing used.
As a general reminder:
- Avoid alcohol for at least 4 days after your session, in line with Inkden’s policy.
- Avoid direct sun exposure on the tattoo for at least 4 weeks and until fully healed.
- Avoid swimming, hot tubs and soaking your tattoo until healed.
- Keep the tattoo clean and follow your artist’s dressing and washing instructions.
- Do not scratch, pick or remove scabs.
- Avoid unnecessary friction or irritation to the tattoo area.
If you develop spreading redness, increasing pain, worsening swelling, pus, fever or other signs of infection, seek prompt medical advice.
